Share My Time

It took me a very long time to be in a relationship. There was no high school romance or summer-after fling. I often felt like I'd never find anybody and that I was just part of that group of girls that was destined never to be noticed by the guys. I thought I was most likely to end up an old maid in the future too, that I should give up thinking about it because it was hopeless.

Over time I've discovered it's not an uncommon fear, especially for the sorts of people that stay clear of school-yard politics, those who prioritise other things or those who are too scared to show their feelings. Writing this song became more than just a stripping back of my personal life, it became an opportunity to see that I wasn't alone in my insecurities.

In writing the song I found that there's a certain jarring conflict in cloaking up endless loneliness in fairytale imagery. The thought that perhaps the prince in all those fairy tales was too busy to notice the princess, that the "trapped fair maiden" could wait endlessly for saving but that a saviour wouldn't exist. These images carried the lyric of the song, but I tried to end it sounding more hopeful than desolate, because the truth is that we aren't alone in our quest for love and there is no reason to give up.

Lyrics

Come sit with me
Decrypting poetry all day long
Plaiting plaits
And tying bow cause there’s nothing going on

No one comes to rescue
Trapped fair maidens oh so shy
When life moves so quickly
There’s no space to watch the sky

Cause I’m high above
In my castle in my tower
And I’m twiddling thumbs
Turning minutes into hours

And I don’t know if you’ll ever have the time
But if you’re free
Then I would love for you to share some of mine
If you’re free
Then I would love for you to share some of mine

Come tell me all your stories
And I’ll tell you dozens more
Tales of happy ever after
Queens and folklore

But lords and dukes and princes like you
Must prioritise
I’ll blow bubbles out my window
And watch days of years go by

Cause I’m high above
In my castle in my tower
And I’m twiddling thumbs
Turning minutes into hours

And I don’t know if you’ll ever have the time
But if you’re free
Then I would love for you to share some of mine
If you’re free
Then I would love for you to share some of mine
Some of mine
Some of mine
Some of mine
