I have a huge announcement to make, and it concerns a really big release (as you may have gathered from the title of this blog post). Origin Story.
In the lead up to this announcement, I counted down and posted a bunch of clues and riddles. So, I figured the best way for me to introduce it was to go through those and explain what I was hinting at.
‘Every Superhero has a…’
As you may have gathered, again from the title of this blog post, this was referring to the title of a CD I’m going to be releasing. Origin Story. Just like every superhero has an origin story, my music has one too.
I’ve had quite a whirlwind of a ride getting to where I am now, and in many ways, I spent a long time finding myself as an artist.
Who we are changes constantly, so it’s hard to expect anyone to ever truly, definitively, find who they are (because it’s going to change by the next day). But, I think I’ve come to more of a point as an artist now, in terms of determining what I want to create, than I ever have before.
‘As many parts as a Doctor has hearts’
This was a sneaky Doctor Who reference, though there were people who picked this one up!! Just like The Doctor has two hearts, the CD I’m going to be releasing has two parts. Namely the Mega EP and Origin Mix.
I’ll be revealing more about these two parts and what they contain in the days to come. But, vaguely, as you may be able to imply from their titles, the Mega EP part is newer material, while the Origin Mix is a mix of some of my older works.
‘A set of lies painted by the imperfections of memory’
This was the most cryptic clue. In short, I was referring to history. Napoléon Bonaparte said ‘history is a set of lies agreed upon’. Julian Barnes said ‘History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.’. I mashed the two together.
The goal of Origin Story is to be a beautifully imperfect collection to historically document the first six years of Meri Amber music. Beautiful, as it shows growth over time and is a journey through the creations I’m so incredibly proud of. Imperfect, as it’s never going to be able to completely represent the six years as nothing can.
‘A song for every hour of the Earth doing a pirouette’
I’m not sure whether artists ever ponder quite as much over how many songs they’re going to include in a CD as I did over this one, but, well, I pondered a lot. As this was a CD where one part would be a compilation, I could genuinely include dozens of songs. But, I decided on a number that I thought had an alluring sort of significance.
24. The number of hours in a day. The approximation (as it’s not entirely accurate) of how long it takes for the Earth to rotate around its axis. A complete day and night.
‘From the shade of an Apple Tree to the light of the sunrise this morning’
This two-part clue was, in a way, a continuation of the previous ones. It both represents the passing of time and the old vs the new.
Apple Tree is the first song I ever released to the world. It didn’t receive a music video and I wouldn’t be surprised if many hadn’t heard of it. But it was the start. The ‘sunrise this morning’ implies something new, a world (of music) you’ve only seen for the first time today.
I hope you’re as excited as I am about the upcoming release of Origin Story. It’s my biggest body of work yet, six years in the making. I can’t put into words how proud I am of it and how much it means to me personally and artistically. I hope, so very much, that you will find as much joy and excitement from it as I found in creating it.
